Austrocephalocereus dybowskii - A rare, columnar cactus known for its dense covering of white bristles and woolly hairs, giving it a distinctive silvery appearance. Over time, it can grow tall and narrow, with yellow-white flowers occasionally forming at the crown in mature specimens.
- Other names: Cephalocereus dybowskii, Old Man Cactus (related species)
- Useful to know: Pet safe, but spiny – handle with care
- Eventual height: Up to 150cm over time
- Origins: Eastern Brazil
Austrocephalocereus Care Sheet
Light: Thrives in full sun – place in the brightest spot possible, such as a south-facing window or glasshouse.
Water: Water sparingly in spring and summer, allowing the soil to dry out fully between waterings. Keep almost dry in winter.
Soil/Nutrition: Use a free-draining cactus mix with added grit or sand. Feed with a diluted cactus fertiliser once a month during the growing season.
Humidity: Prefers low humidity – ideal for dry indoor environments.
Pruning & Propagation: No pruning needed. Propagation is by seed; offsetting is uncommon.
