Astrophytum ornatun
Astrophytum ornatum - A striking, slow-growing cactus with ribbed, star-shaped form and bold white flecking across its green body. As it matures, it develops a tall, columnar shape and may produce large, yellow, daisy-like flowers in summer.
- Other names: Bishop’s Cap Cactus, Star Cactus
- Useful to know: Pet safe, but spiny – handle with care
- Eventual height: Up to 100cm over many years
- Origins: Central Mexico
Astrophytum Care Sheet
Light: Needs bright light and plenty of direct sun. A sunny windowsill or conservatory is ideal.
Water: Water sparingly during the growing season (spring and summer), allowing soil to dry out completely between waterings. Reduce to minimal watering in winter.
Soil/Nutrition: Use a free-draining cactus compost or add extra grit to standard compost. Feed once or twice during the growing season with a cactus fertiliser.
Humidity: Prefers dry air – avoid high humidity or excessive misting.
Pruning & Propagation: No pruning required. Propagation is typically by seed, as offsets are rare.
