Anthurium 'Karma Black Love'
Anthurium 'Karma Black Love' is a flowering houseplant with glossy green leaves and striking, heart-shaped spathes in deep burgundy-purple shades that appear almost black. These waxy, flower-like bracts surround a central flower spike and can remain attractive for several weeks.
Its upright habit and rich colouring make it an attractive feature for side tables and bright indoor displays. A warm room with indirect light and good humidity suits it well, including a bright bathroom or kitchen. With suitable conditions, it can produce new flowers throughout the year.
- Other names: Flamingo Flower, Painter's Palette, Anthurium 'Black Love'
- Useful to know: Toxic if ingested - keep away from pets and children
- Feature: Glossy, almost black spathes contrasting with green foliage
- Eventual height: Up to approximately 50cm indoors
- Origins: Cultivated Andraeanum Group variety; Anthurium andraeanum is native to Colombia and Ecuador
Anthurium Care
Light: Provide bright, indirect light. Avoid strong direct sunshine, which can scorch the leaves, and deep shade, which reduces flowering.
Water: Allow the upper compost to dry before watering thoroughly. Drain fully and never leave the pot standing in water. Use room-temperature rainwater where possible.
Humidity: Prefers humid air. A bright bathroom or a humidifier can help, particularly in centrally heated homes. Keep away from drying heat.
Temperature: Keep warm, ideally around 18–25°C, avoiding cold draughts and sudden temperature changes.
Feeding: Apply an orchid fertiliser fortnightly from spring to autumn, following the product instructions.
Repotting: Repot when necessary into a slightly larger pot with drainage holes. Use an airy, acidic mix containing peat-free ericaceous compost, orchid bark and horticultural grit.
Maintenance: Remove faded flower stems and damaged leaves at the base. Wear gloves when handling, as the sap can irritate skin.
Winter care: Reduce watering as growth slows while maintaining warmth and bright, indirect light.
Experience level: Moderate
