Alnus incana 'Aurea'
Alnus incana 'Aurea' is a distinctive deciduous tree with yellow to yellow-green foliage and an upright, broadly conical habit. Its pale leaves bring brightness to larger planting schemes, while orange-yellow young shoots provide further colour, particularly after the foliage falls.
Long, hanging catkins develop warm orange and pink tones through winter before opening in spring. Smaller female flowers develop into woody, cone-like fruits that turn dark brown and persist into winter. This combination of colourful foliage, stems and catkins gives 'Aurea' interest across several seasons, making it an attractive specimen for larger gardens, parkland and waterside planting.
Very hardy and adaptable, this RHS Award of Garden Merit variety grows best in full sun. It tolerates a wide range of soils, including poor, heavy and wet ground, and can cope with drier conditions once established. Water regularly during establishment and allow plenty of room for its mature crown to develop.
