Alnus glutinosa 'Imperialis'

Alnus glutinosa 'Imperialis' is a graceful deciduous tree valued for its finely cut, deeply lobed green foliage, which creates a delicate, almost fern-like appearance. Its elegant, upright habit makes it an attractive specimen tree for larger gardens and naturalistic planting schemes.

Purple-brown male catkins provide interest in late winter and early spring, followed by small cone-like fruits that remain decorative later in the year and provide additional wildlife value. The foliage develops attractive yellow tones before falling in autumn.

Particularly well suited to damp or poorly drained ground, 'Imperialis' thrives in moist soils and is an excellent choice for planting beside ponds, streams or in heavier clay soils. It is fully hardy and performs best in full sun, although it will tolerate some light shade.
