Grow Your Own Potatoes for Christmas

Grow Your Own Potatoes for Christmas

Grow Your Own Potatoes for Christmas

There is nothing quite like serving your own home-grown potatoes with Christmas dinner, and now is the perfect time to get started.

Christmas seed potatoes are easy to grow in large pots, tubs or potato bags, making them ideal even if you do not have much garden space. Simply plant them in good quality compost, keep them well watered, and protect the plants from frost as the weather turns colder.

For the best results, plant your potatoes in August or early September. Choose a sheltered, sunny spot outdoors while the weather is still mild, then move the container into a greenhouse, cold frame, porch or other protected spot before the first frosts arrive.

How To Grow Christmas Potatoes

  • Use a large pot, tub or potato growing bag with drainage holes.
  • Add around 10cm of compost to the bottom of the container.
  • Place your seed potatoes on top of the compost, with the shoots facing upwards.
  • Cover with another 10cm of compost and water well.
  • As the shoots grow, keep adding more compost until the container is almost full.
  • Keep the compost moist but not waterlogged.
  • Move the container under cover before the first frosts.
  • Harvest when the foliage begins to die back, or gently check the compost in December for fresh new potatoes.
