Top Tips For Watering In A Heatwave

Heatwaves can be tough on our gardens, but a few simple steps can help plants cope with the hot, dry conditions. Here are some easy ways to keep your plants healthy and thriving during periods of extreme heat.

Watering

We’re usually advised to water morning and evening for the most efficient uptake by plants, but if slugs are damaging your plants, water in the early morning instead of the evening. Slugs thrive in damp conditions overnight, so morning watering lets the soil surface dry before they're most active.

Keep containers on saucers during hot weather to catch excess water, helping plants reabsorb moisture and keeping the compost hydrated for longer. In winter, swap to pot feet to improve drainage and prevent pots from sitting in cold, waterlogged conditions.

Maintenance

Deadhead spent blooms regularly, especially during hot weather. It helps plants conserve water and energy by preventing seed production, encouraging more flowers and keeping plants looking their best.

Apply a layer of mulch to the soil surface to help retain moisture, keep roots cooler, and reduce how often you need to water during hot weather.

Feeding

Feed plants regularly, especially those in containers. The limited compost in pots means nutrients are quickly used up, so a regular high-potash feed helps keep plants healthy and flowering throughout the season.
