The beautiful blooms of Hydrangea paniculata make a stunning display during the summer months when their large panicles of flowers burst open. These dramatic flower cones provide a long-lasting show, often changing colour as the season progresses – from crisp whites and lime greens to rich pinks and deep reds.
Unlike the rounded heads of Hydrangea macrophylla, Hydrangea paniculata produces broad, conical flowerheads made up of showy sterile flowers mixed with smaller fertile ones, giving a distinctive texture and layered look. They also have the added bonus of being less sensitive to soil pH, making their colour more predictable.
A Boom In Blooms
Though Hydrangea paniculata was first popularised in the early 1800s, there were very few varieties until the last couple of decades. The past 20 years have seen a surge of exciting new cultivars thanks to the work of dedicated plant breeders – with improvements in colour, form, and plant size.
In response to this, the RHS conducted a major trial in 2008, comparing older and newer introductions. Many received the prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM). The trial also found that hard-pruned plants produced fewer but larger flowers compared to lightly trimmed ones.
