Top 6 Houseplants After Christmas

Once Christmas is over and the tree comes down, many homes are left with an empty corner or bare space that suddenly feels noticeable. Rather than leaving it empty, a well-chosen houseplant can instantly bring life, structure and a sense of calm back into the room. Large foliage plants are especially effective at filling vertical space, softening interiors and creating a natural focal point that lasts far longer than festive decorations. From bold statement plants to easy-care favourites, these six houseplants are ideal for refreshing your home after Christmas and starting the new year surrounded by greenery.

  1. Fiddle Leaf Fig (Ficus lyrata): A well-known and much-loved houseplant that’s easier to look after than its reputation suggests - just a few hints and tips make all the difference. Choose a smaller plant for a shelf or sideboard, or go for a taller specimen to properly fill the space. Keep it in a bright room, away from draughts and radiators, and water little and often so the compost stays lightly moist (not soggy).

  2. Snake Plant (Sansevieria): One of the easiest houseplants to care for, and a brilliant way to fill a Christmas tree space with minimal effort. It thrives on neglect, needs very little watering, and isn’t fussy about light - making it ideal if you want maximum impact with low maintenance.

  3. Dragon Tree (Dracaena marginata): A sleek, architectural plant that can last for many, many years - well worth giving pride of place once the festive décor is packed away. It prefers a bright spot and evenly moist compost, but it’s also surprisingly tolerant of lower light and occasional watering, making it a flexible choice for busy homes.

  4. Weeping Fig (Ficus benjamina): With bright, indirect light and regular watering, this will grow well and keep its foliage looking pristine. Reduce watering during the winter months and avoid moving it around too often - a settled weeping fig is a happy one and will reward you with lush, elegant growth.

  5. Devil’s Ivy (Pothos): If you’d rather not fill the space with an upright plant, try bringing greenery in at height instead. Devil’s Ivy trails beautifully from a hanging pot or high shelf, quickly softening corners and adding colour with very little care needed. It’s an easy, forgiving choice that still looks impressive.

  6. Swiss Cheese Plant (Monstera deliciosa): The on-trend favourite of the last few years, Monstera fills a Christmas tree spot with ease thanks to its bold, glossy leaves. Give it plenty of bright but indirect light and water every 1-2 weeks (less in winter). Don’t forget to gently dust the leaves now and then to keep them looking their best.
