Cornus mas 'Golden Glory'
Cornus mas 'Golden Glory' is a spreading deciduous shrub or small tree valued for its abundant golden-yellow flowers, which appear on bare branches in February and March. The early display brings welcome colour to the garden before the foliage emerges and provides useful interest towards the end of winter.
Glossy green leaves follow the flowers and develop attractive purple tones in autumn. Small, bright red cherry-like fruits ripen later in the season and are edible, although naturally sharp in flavour. They can be used for making preserves, jellies and other cooked recipes, while also providing a food source for wildlife.
Reliable and adaptable, 'Golden Glory' grows well in fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil and will tolerate some shade and heavier clay soils. Its combination of early flowers, attractive foliage, autumn colour and decorative fruit makes it an excellent small specimen tree for gardens and mixed planting schemes.
