Cornus mas
Cornus mas is a hardy deciduous shrub or small tree valued for its excellent multi-season interest. One of the earliest woody plants to flower, it produces masses of tiny, bright yellow blooms on bare stems in late winter and early spring, bringing welcome colour to the garden before the leaves emerge.
The flowers are followed by fresh green foliage and glossy red fruits in late summer. These cherry-like fruits are edible when fully ripe and are also attractive to birds, while the early flowers provide a valuable source of nectar for pollinating insects.
Tough, reliable and adaptable, Cornus mas can be grown as a specimen, incorporated into a mixed hedge or used for informal screening. It performs well in sun or partial shade and is suitable for a wide range of well-drained soils.
