Allium sphaerocephalon
Allium sphaerocephalon, commonly known as drumstick allium, is a distinctive ornamental onion prized for its unique, oval flowerheads and architectural presence. In early to mid-summer, tightly packed blooms emerge green before gradually deepening to rich wine-red and purple tones, creating a striking two-tone effect.
Held on slender, upright stems above narrow grey-green foliage, this elegant allium weaves effortlessly through borders and planting schemes, adding height and movement without overwhelming neighbouring plants. Exceptionally attractive to bees and pollinators, it is ideal for naturalistic, prairie-style planting and also makes an excellent cut or dried flower.
