Enjoying the Spring Sunshine

Enjoying the Spring Sunshine

We’ve enjoyed some wonderful spring weather this week! Cold, crisp mornings have developed into beautiful clear days. We loved seeing more of you enjoying browsing in our outdoor sales area where the team have set up our colour themed areas this week. My particular favourite is the yellow section where the plants are almost glowing in the sunshine! Looking great in this area this week are:

  • Choisya ternata ‘Sundance’ – also known as Mexican Orange Blossom, this vibrant shrub boasts bright yellow, evergreen foliage.
  • Doronicum orientale ‘Leonardo Compact’ – a deciduous perennial with masses of large, striking yellow flowers in bloom now.
  • Erythronium ‘Pagoda’ AGM – the dainty soft yellow flower heads of this Dog’s Tooth Violet look beautiful ‘bobbing’ gently in the spring breeze.
  • Forsythia x intermedia ‘Mindor’ – just coming into flower thanks to the sunshine this week, this compact, deciduous shrub has slender, arching branches holding small, slightly fragrant flowers.

There is even more colour to enjoy under our bedding canopy where our vibrant home grown primroses have been joined by Dianthus and Bellis, both are ideal for pots, containers or the front of your borders. Also now in stock are Sweet Pea seedlings; always a popular choice these beauties are a staple of the quintessential cottage garden. If you’re looking for new pots for the garden this year we have a great selection with something suitable for every style and taste including a new ‘William Morris’ range inspired by the famous Arts & Crafts designer.

In the greenhouse we now have our full range of baby bedding plants in and some of the houseplants have been reduced in price as we look to make space for more tender bedding and vegetable plants in the coming weeks! Back in stock in houseplants this week is the beautiful Spathiphyllum ‘Silver Cupido’, a wonderful variegated form of the popular ‘Peace Lily’. These plants are so easy to look after that this rarer variegated variety sold out very quickly last time we had it in stock.

As gardeners we are naturally environmentally conscientious and our buyers are always on the hunt for ranges of products that endorse this. There are many ways in which we can help the environment including buying locally produced goods such as our home grown plants or Tweedside honey. Or why not switch to using Bee’s Wrap products? These food storage wraps are a natural alternative to plastic and are washable, reusable, and compostable. If you’d like to help the environment by encouraging more wildlife into your outside spaces specialist feeds and insect houses are a great way to start. Our Wildlife World range has just been expanded to include squirrel and hedgehog feeds as well as several different types of insect house including ones specifically for solitary bees, a vital garden pollinator.

Don’t forget it’s not long until now until Mother’s Day which falls on 22nd March this year. If you’re not sure what to get the special lady in your life to say ‘Thank you’ then we’re here to help with a range of gifts, cards and plants. Why not treat her to a beautiful Orchid or one of the cosmetic bags or purses in our new range from Alice Wheeler?
