Top 5 Climbers To Grow

Growing a climber is a great way to liven up a bland fence or soften an unsightly wall, and early Autumn is a good time to plant them. This allows roots time to establish after the heat of Summer and before Winter sets in, to be ready for a floriferous display next Spring. Our top 5 climbers to grow have been chosen to help you decide which you would like to grow up your trellis or fence, or perhaps a pergola and for privacy. Many climbers can even be grow in larger containers with support or a back board of trellis so they have something to climb up. There are so many to choose from, some growing more vigorously than others, some with flowers and some with varied foliage. Many climbers can be great for wildlife, encouraging insects for birds and bats to eat plus resting and nesting spaces as well. Whichever climber you choose, it is sure to add interest and delight to your garden.

There are so many varieties of Clematis to choose from, there really is one or more for every garden, every aspect and most soils. With three groups to choose from, it is possible to combine plants to keep a flowering display almost throughout the year. Group 1 flowers from Winter to Spring on last years growth, with no pruning required. Group 2 blooms from Spring to Summer on last year's growth, and benefits from a prune in February then after the first flush of flowers. Group 3 flowers from Summer into Autumn on new growth, and needs cutting down to the ground at the start of Spring. Clematis is a hardy climber and very easy to grow and care for.

Rambling Roses have stunning clusters of flowers is Summer, only blooming once a year but bringing a stunning display each time. Most varieties produce hips, and as a vigorous plant a rambler can be grown for privacy or to hide unsightly walls and fences, or up through trees to add some colour in the canopy. It will even grow on a north facing wall and looks great in a wildlife garden. Once established, a prune of flowered side shoots or any damaged or diseased wood will ensure a floriferous display next year.

Rosa Rambling Rector

There are plenty of Honeysuckles to choose from and with some of the best scents in the garden, they are ideal to be planted somewhere near where you will sit or walk by. Most varieties flower from late Spring through to late Summer with rounded heads of trumpet flowers which develop into ornamental fruit for wildlife. They grow quickly and are a great feature climber.

  • Virginia Creeper (Parthenocissus henryana)

You may know the well known colour changing climber that soon takes over and lasts forever but this one is far less vigorous and can even be grown in smaller gardens. The flowers and berries, although loved by bees, are fairly insignificant. It’s the autumn colour that really stands out. Easy to grow in fertile, well drained soil it will soon climb up a supporting structure.

Parthenocissus henryana

This is a stunning, fragrant evergreen climber with dark green leaves that change colour in Autumn and produces white star shaped flowers in Summer. Easy to grow, it will soon climb if planted in well drained soil with full sun. This can also be grown inside during the colder months.
