Hellebore Heaven

During January we're in Hellebore Heaven!

The jewels of the winter garden, Hellebores come out in all of their glory to offer us beautiful blooms when most plants are dormant. All Hellebores are very hardy and perennial for many years when grown in appropriate conditions. They are best grown in partial shade and a fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Suitable for beds, borders, pots, containers and woodland areas, Hellebores are versatile and make a great addition to any garden. Below we will take a closer look at some of our team's favourite Hellebores:

Helleborus 'HGC Leona'

Part of the Helleborus Gold Collection (HGC) which only included the most precious and long-lived varieties, 'Leona' boasts stunning huge, forward-facing dusky pink flowers, with a large central boss of stamens, borne on tall stems over a long period through winter.

Helleborus 'HGC Ice N' Roses Carlotta'

Also part of the HGC, the Hellebores in the 'Ice N' Roses' (Helleborus x glandorfensis) series owe their fascinating colours and robust nature to the fact that they are crosses between Snow Roses and Lenten Roses making them extremely robust, long-lived and disease resistant. 'Carlotta' is a pretty variety producing large, forward-facing pink & creamy-white flowers, with a huge central boss of stamens, borne on tall stems over a long period throughout winter.

Helleborus niger 'Snowdrift'

This is a spectacular variation on the well-known ‘Christmas Rose’ or niger that is so familiar. 'Snowdrift' produces large saucer-shaped flowers that face outwards, pure white in colour but having delightful inner rays of additional sepals that gradually open varying slightly in size, forming a double bloom.

Helleborus orientalis 'Hello White'

Above lush, green leaves, 'Hello White' boasts gorgeous large, single flowers of white petals streaked from the centre with rich red. Flowering from late Winter into Spring, this pretty and eye-catching variety is ideal for your patio containers before being moved into a mixed bed or border.

Helleborus 'Walberton's® Rosemary'

This is an impressive hybrid that will brighten up any Winter garden with its gorgeous flowers. These open pale pink from mid-January and slowly deepen in colour to a rich pinky-red over many weeks. The large 8cm flowers of 'Walberton's Rosemary' have been specially bred to look upwards unlike many other drooping Hellebores.
