Soil-testing by hand

Sow annual flower seeds now for a pretty display by early summer, but make sure your soil is warm enough first. Hold the back of your hand against the ground, and if it feels chilly, your seeds will shiver too: when it's comfortable to the touch for three consecutive days, you're ready to go.
