Sarracenia purpurea ssp. venosa
Sarracenia purpurea ssp. venosa is a compact carnivorous pitcher plant forming attractive clumps of rounded, bulbous traps that develop rich pink, red and purple tones in good light. Mature plants also produce tall, unusual dark pink flowers, while the pitchers remain attractive for much of the year before older traps are gradually replaced by fresh growth.
Its compact habit makes it particularly well suited to a bright windowsill, conservatory or cool greenhouse. Strong light encourages the deepest colouring, while plants grown in shadier positions tend to remain greener. As a more southerly form of Sarracenia purpurea, it is less cold tolerant than ssp. purpurea and is best protected from severe winter conditions.

Sarracenia Care
Light: Position in bright light or full sun for the strongest pitcher colour; it will tolerate some light shade
Water: Keep permanently moist during active growth by standing the pot in a shallow tray of rainwater, distilled water or reverse-osmosis water
Water quality: Avoid tap water where possible, particularly in hard-water areas, as dissolved minerals can damage carnivorous plants
Compost: Grow in specialist nutrient-poor carnivorous plant compost and never use ordinary multipurpose compost
Feeding: Do not use conventional fertiliser; the pitchers naturally obtain nutrients by catching insects
Indoor care: When grown indoors, a small amount of rainwater can be added to open pitchers to help maintain their natural trapping conditions
Winter care: Growth slows in winter and older pitchers may die back; protect this subspecies from severe frost and prolonged freezing conditions

Sarracenia Plant Care
Watering
You can’t overwater a Sarracenia, in principle. It’s not a problem for this plant to stand continuously in water. We advise you to put the potted plant in a dish of water. Make sure there is always enough water in the dish. Tap water is fine.
Location
Keep the plant in a light spot. This is important for growth and colouring. This can be in the window sill or outside. The plant also likes a humid climate.
All the Sarracenias in our range can easily survive in temperatures between -10°C to 40°C. Therefore, pond side is the ideal place for the plant outside. The plant goes dormant towards autumn and winter. Old pitchers turn brown and the plant doesn’t form new pitchers. In spring or early summer the development of the plant and new pitchers will resume.
Fertilizer
The same applies to all carnivorous plants. They started to catch insects because they live in nutrient-poor soil. Although fertilizer is easy, you quickly give too much. Therefore it is better not to give any.
