Is Your Front Door #FirstDayPhotoReady?

The new school year is upon us, and the time to take a smart photo of your little ones as a keepsake for the future. A couple of well placed planting containers or a refresh of your front garden planting scheme can really elevate your timeless snaps! Designed by our plant staff, we have put together three inspirational front door display themes which you can recreate at home, to ensure your front garden is looking at it's best for the inaugural ‘first day back photo’.

Bee-utiful

Suitable for full sun to partial shade, this scheme is designed with a passion for wildlife and nature in mind, and is based on a pastel colour palette.

To get the look:

Use insect friendly, open single flowers such as Echinacea, Lavender, Scabious, Buddleia and Nepeta. Avoid double flowers as these are harder for pollinating insects to get to the nectar. Plant in swathes and groups of three or fives – this magnifies the plants giving the display a more gentle appearance. The showstopper in this garden is the Hydrangea paniculata – a soft and airy architectural plant with neutral colours.

Blazing Autumn

Suitable for sunny, south-facing areas, the hot vibrant colours of this garden will bring a ray of sunshine to your front door!

To get the look:

Use plants such as Rudbeckia, Echinacea and Astrantia, and add Stipa tenuissima (aka ponytail grass) for contrast as they are beautifully soft and airy. Plant in drifts interspersed with grasses to break them up and mix up the textures.

Classic

Suitable for shady areas, this timeless look will give you maximum impact for minimal effort so it’s got to be a winner! Great for anyone short on space or time, as it’s quick to implement and maintain.

To get the look:

Base your display on one single accent colour – in this case red. Compliment this with just a few other classic colours such as green and white. We have used Buxus balls which were popularised in Victorian times for their formal look, along with trailing English Ivy and evergreen ferns for texture and contrast. The colour comes courtesy of the striking red Cyclamen, a classic late summer/early autumn plant which will provide months of colour.
