The Forest Stewardship Council is an international network to promote
responsible management of the world’s forests.
FSC brings people together to find solutions to the problems created
by bad forestry practices and to reward good forest management.
Environmentally appropriate forest management ensures that the harvest
of timber protects the forest’s biodiversity and ecology.
Socially beneficial forest management helps both local people and
society at large to enjoy long-term benefits and also provide strong
incentives to local people to manage the forest resources.
Economically viable forest management means that forest operations
are structured and managed so as to be sufficiently profitable,
without generating financial profit at the expense of the forest
resources, the ecosystem or affected communities.
10 Facts about FSC
1. You can buy wood products with a clear conscience when you see
the FSC logo. FSC forests are managed with consideration for people,
wildlife and the environment.
2. The FSC label guarantees that the trees that are harvested are
replaced or allowed to regenerate naturally.
3. Parts of the forest are protected entirely, in order to protect
rare animals and plants.
4. FSC protects the rights of indigenous people to use the forest.
If they have sacred sites in the forest these are exempt from felling.
5. The forest owner must use local workers to run the forest, and
provide training, safety equipment and a decent salary.
The forest owner is often obliged to support the community in other
ways, such as through the development of schools.
6. FSC is a market-based initiative, which also ensures better conditions
for the forest and the people whose livelihoods depend on it.
7. FSC gives an assurance that future generations will be able to
enjoy the benefits of the forest.
8. All the wood is tracked from the forest to the store. Every link
between the forest and the consumer is certified to make it clearly
identifiable, which wood is FSC certified and which is not.
9. FSC is the only wood certification scheme endorsed by the major
environmental charities, including WWF, Greenpeace and The Woodland
Trust.
10. The FSC label is not only available on wood for furniture. It
can also be found on floors, decking, paper, printed matter, charcoal,
kitchen utensils, latex, even venison.
Our goal is to source all of the timber products that we sell from
manufacturers who
use Forestry Stewardship Council certified timber (FSC) by 2011.

AFK
Garden & The Environment
AFK take their carbon footprint very seriously.
So much so that this year they have committed to planting 500 trees
to offset their carbon emissions.
They recycle all of Their waste products including wood, plastic
and metal which are converted into a range of diverse products such
as animal bedding and wood pellets for heating boilers.
Wherever possible we use materials that have been sourced from sustainable
forests.
Peter Smith & The Environment
Peter Smith only buy from FSC registered sawmills; here the fast
growing Swedish Red Wood is cultivated in a strictly managed way.
For every tree felled at least another is replanted, ensuring forests
continue to flourish for decades to come.
This raw wood is then transported over land and sea NOT BY AIR.
Peter Smith’s stains and paints are water based, ensuring
no harmful chemicals disturb the environment or the delicate balance
of a wild bird’s life style.
They are very proud to say all their products are manufactured in
Yorkshire, this enables them to keep their Carbon Foot Print and
the Environmental impact to an absolute minimum especially when
they are actively involved in planting 1000’s of trees each
year.
Anchorfast
British Made - All timber production is carried out at their Doncaster
factory.
Anchor Fast pride themselves on producing all of their furniture
locally.
Environmentally responsible - As a major manufacturer, Anchor Fast
take their responsibilities to the environment seriously. The timber
they use comes from FSC / PEFC sustainable sources in Sweden. Here,
the colder climate means the timber takes longer to grow, which
makes it denser and enhances the finished product.
Karri
Our Karri range is proud to display the FSC Logo - Forest Stewardship
Council. This gives you the reassurance that all the timbers have
been selected from well-managed forests.
A dense, close-grained hardwood with a lifespan of more than 10
years. Our Karri is sourced from South Africa. Treated, it retains
its original, reddish brown colour.
Left untreated, it mellows to a silver grey colour.
As with all Alexander Rose furniture, we recommend an occasional
clean.
To enhance the appearance of the furniture, we recommend using our
Alexander Rose Timber Treatment Plus and Timber Sealer.
Mahogany
This well-know premier hardwood has all the natural characteristics
needed to create highly attractive and durable garden furniture.
With our commitment to environmental sustainability, only mahogany
from Ghana is used, which is committed to sourcing its timber from
well-managed forests.
Mahogany has a durability outdoors in excess of 12 years.
It can be left untreated, allowing it to mellow to a silver grey
colour.
Peat Free Policy
Cowell’s
recognises that peat bogs provide a unique habitat for flora and
fauna and important stores of carbon.
Our aim is to manage, minimise and eventually eliminate our peat
use in a controlled manner.
We will use declining amounts of peat and we will continue to ensure
that it has been extracted with the minimum amount of environmental
impact, and we will not buy or sell peat that has been extracted
from designated
conservation areas, such as Sites of Special Scientific Interest
(SSSIs).
All growing media sold by Cowell’s shall comply with the HTA's
Growing Media Initiatives Peat Sourcing Policy.
