The sound of running water brings life to a garden. This can be achieved with a pond, pebble pool or a self-contained water feature. A pond can give your garden a new dimension, whether you use it to attract wildlife, to create a new garden underwater or simply to hear the sound of moving water. Ponds can be made from pre-formed rigid structures or flexible liners. Pond liners give you the option of creating your own design. To calculate how large a liner ought to be bought, you add twice the maximum depth to the length add twice the maximum depth to the width. Add a further foot to the length and width to allow for tucking under paving stones or rocks. To give your pond a more natural setting there is a large variety of aquatic plants, which are both decorative and functional. Plants give oxygen to the water and remove nitrates from the water thereby limiting the growth of algae. The ideal aim is to have two thirds of your pond shaded by plants. The choice of colours from the water lilies can give your pond a spectacular painting. Fish movement can be very relaxing and pond owners have a great choice of varieties from the common Goldfish, Comets which prefer plenty of space to take advantage of their fast sleek form, Shubunkins with their multi-coloured bodies, Tench to the kings of the pond - the Koi.
